Origin Mexico | Dripping Springs Local Love

I got to meet Yazmin a few weeks ago and photographed her at her home in Headwaters (one of my favorite neighborhoods!). I loved learning more about her business and am now the proud owner of tons of Origin Mexico clothing which I happily wear with my collection of giant colorful earrings!

Let’s learn more about her business…

What brought you to Dripping Springs?

My family visited Dripping Springs three years ago and I instantly fell in love with the area. We were searching for a place that was family friendly, with lots of outdoor activities and still relatively close to Austin. The rolling hills reminded me of the place I grew up, Tijuana Mexico and from my first impression, I loved the topography, the landscape, and the openness of the area.

During our first visit, we explored several housing communities and our goal was to find the one that would be a good fit for our family. During that process, we happened to meet this very nice woman who was out walking her dogs. She realized that we were new to the area, started chatting about Dripping Springs and all the benefits of living here and something about her warmth, kindness and approachability reconfirmed our decision to call Dripping Springs home.

How did Origin Mexico get started?

I like to share that the beginning of Origin Mexico was created many years ago, through the path carved by my grandparents when they decided to leave Durango, Mexico in pursuit of a better future for their children. Growing up, I observed how my family worked so diligently to create a better future for the next generation and the sacrifices that entailed. Through this experience, I learned the importance of an optimistic mindset. the power of resilience, and the significance of embracing your own personal story and origins. Although I didn’t quite appreciate this until I became an adult, these lessons became the main pillars to a brand whose creation began many years ago but didn’t materialize until recently.

Our brand mission and values are focused on creating a positive impact in the lives of those seeking a better future for their families, just as my family did many years ago.

How long does it take for the hand embroidered clothes to be completed?

Our goal is to help preserve the hand embroidery techniques that have been passed down through generations. The hand embroidery process varies from design to design and on average it takes approximately 24-26 hours for one dress to be completed. We like to highlight this important fact when we share our items with our community and our customers are not only surprised but they have a newfound appreciation for their dress that a skilled artisan created in that amount of time.

Where do you draw inspiration for the clothing and accessories?

I’m inspired by the vibrant colors and culture of Mexico, the talent and passion of our artisan partners and the positive impact each piece is creating in the artisan communities of Mexico. I also draw inspiration from fabrics and patterns that incorporate soft, natural aesthetics but that are versatile enough to be worn everyday of the week.

I personally gravitate toward styles that are comfortable, timeless, original and representative of the traditional styles of Mexico and try to incorporate these features into our collections.

How does your model empower families in Mexico?

Our goal is to create a positive impact in the lives of artisan women by providing a platform where they may share their talent and beautiful creations to the global market.  We have found that this process helps many artisans achieve the financial independence they are seeking for their families.  Many of our artisan partners do not benefit from financial or education resources and hand embroidery is their livelihood. Not only are they improving their quality of life by sharing these techniques with us, but they do this in their homes while with their children who in part are learning from watching their mother’s embroidery process.

We are also very proud to partner with a nonprofit in Oaxaca, Mexico that supports and empowers artisan women through education and microfinance; a portion of our proceeds are donated to this amazing organization.

What is your favorite thing about running your company?

Seeing women achieve economic independence is something very personal to me and this by far is my favorite thing about running Origin Mexico. Many of the women we work with are single mothers with very limited resources and their main goal is to improve the quality of life for their children. This resonates with me because I was raised by mother and grandmother and they both preserved despite many life challenges. I am often reminded of how your path can change based on the opportunities presented to you and those you create for yourself.  Seeing women thrive by sharing their talent and spending time with their family is something that I am very passionate about and is one of our main missions.

What is your favorite outfit that has been created through Origin Mexico?

There’s so many to choose from but I would say the Mommy and Me Collections are my favorite because not only do we as moms enjoy wearing the embroidered blouse or dress but our littles ones are also having fun wearing the colorful piece. For me, it allows an opportunity to share with my daughter’s more about our culture, our history and the artisan women behind the creation of their fun outfit.

Have you been able to link up with other small business owners in Dripping Springs?

Yes, I am so grateful for the support and encouragement found in the community of Dripping Springs and happy to share that I have collaborated with other small businesses in the area and look forward to future collaborations.

Our first pop-up ever was held at 12 Fox Beer Co. which was followed by other pop-up events at Fitzhugh Brewery and Le Muse Coffee.  We have recently started to carry our Talavera Jewelry Collection at Juniper Tree and are so excited to soon be part of Founder’s Day!

Where do you recommend other small business owners go to build community and support locally?

I am a big fan of social media and active on the local facebook groups but also like to stay up to date through the Dripping Springs Chamber of Commerce and Dripping Springs Outlook Magazine. I’ve found that this community is very supportive and encouraging of small businesses and have received amazing advice and support from other fellow small businesses in the area.

Where is your favorite place to shop in this area for other colorful clothing and accessories?

I love to shop at Juniper Tree and Vintage Soul. I can spend hours in those stores just looking at the unique pieces they carry.  They are also always super friendly and welcoming when I visit their stores.

What is your mission and heart behind what you do?

The heart behind what I do revolves around the importance of family and being present for them. Missing out on life’s precious moments is something that resonates with me because I missed out on many experiences with my family while I pursued my career and attempted to reach success – or my past definition of success. Before you realize it, you are working 10-12 hour days and your goals and priorities are completely misaligned with your own values. Yet, I am grateful for this because I am now relishing every moment I am able to spend with my family and I have discovered how our partnership with artisan women allows them to spend more time with their loved ones. Our items are handcrafted in the homes of the artisans and this creates an opportunity for them to be close to their children, while they work and share the beauty of Mexican textiles.

What do you love most about Dripping Springs?

I love how this community has been so welcoming to our family and my small business.  We love to spend a weekend out exploring new restaurants, breweries, wineries and shops in the area and often will run into our neighbors or people we’ve met in the community. This sense of community is what makes me love calling Dripping Springs our home.
