Longhorn Cavern State Park | Dripping Springs Day Trip

The Texas Hill Country is such a fabulous place to live. I am constantly making lists of cool places to visit within an hour radius of Dripping Springs and it just seems like the possibilities are ENDLESS!

Longhorn Cavern State Park has been on my radar for a while, but the $22 cave tour fee per person kept me from pulling the trigger and scheduling. I always used my Texas State Park pass to get in for free at all of the parks and just kept earmarking this one for the future.

Well there is nothing better than mixing in a 68 degree cave tour with constant swimming trips when the Texas summers are pre-heating and already 100 degrees outside in June! It was so refreshing!

The park trails and buildings are open to the public to tour and hike for free, but the cave tour is $18-$46/person depending on if you want to purchase the mining bag as a souvenir.

Longhorn Cavern is a unique limestone cave system, adorned with incredible formations like stalactites and stalagmites and fist sized crystals!

Its captivating beauty and excellent acoustics make it a popular venue for musical performances and even weddings!

Beyond its natural splendor, Longhorn Cavern holds fascinating historical tales. Native American tribes sought refuge here, and legends of hidden treasure and passages have attracted adventurers for centuries. Your tour guide will share stories of the wild west that really take you back to a different time!

During Prohibition, it even served as a secret speakeasy, hosting locals and notorious gangsters alike.

For the adventurous, the Wild Cave Tour offers an exhilarating exploration of narrow passages and rocky slopes. This is over $100/person and last 2-3 hours. You wear knee pads and a helmet with a lamp as the only source of light as you crawl through the bottom level, the “basement”, of the cave system.

Longhorn Cavern State Park also offers scenic hiking trails in the picturesque Hill Country landscape. You can see a 360 view of the hill country from the observation tower. Bird enthusiasts will love spotting the diverse avian species that inhabit the park.
