A few weeks ago our real estate office got to tour one of my fellow realtors’, Heather Jones, client’s property where they’ve custom built a luxury horse barn and what I like to call a Marfa-Montana style home. It was so unique, minimalistic and rustic all at once and I knew I had to show you all what we saw! So I scheduled a time to meet them out there and photograph the barn and interview them! Check out Ford Design LLC and hire them to build your next equestrian project around Dripping Springs.

What brought you to Dripping Springs?
We were originally looking for land to build our dream home and farm so we could have our horses with us. We completely fell in love with the raw beauty of Dripping Springs and the sense of community here. It’s such a special place to call home.

What are your favorite things about living in this area?
We love the people and that Dripping still has a small-town feel. It’s perfectly situated — close to Austin, Johnson City, Wimberley, and Fredericksburg. We get to live on our farm surrounded by nature, but we’re still just minutes from great restaurants and shops. It really is the best of both worlds.

Tell us more about Ford Design LLC.
Ford Design is a family business founded by my parents, Matt and Tina Ford, over 25 years ago. Today, my mom and I run the company together. We specialize in designing and building bespoke custom homes and stables. Our goal is to create environments that feel timeless. Design that work with the land and, while new, look as though they’ve always belonged there.
What inspired you to expand into barn design after being an established custom home builder?
I’m a competitive show jumper and have always had a deep love for horses. When we moved our horses here, we built our first barn and that’s when we realized how much opportunity there was to bring the same level of craftsmanship and detail we use in our homes to the equestrian world. That first barn opened the door for us to start creating custom stables for others.

Where do you find your design inspiration?
We love combining modern innovation with old-world charm. A lot of our inspiration comes from historic architecture across Europe — where you see so much beauty in movement, texture, and imperfection. In a time when everything is built to be flawless, we try to bridge that gap and bring back authenticity and character.

What does your typical design and build process look like?
We start by getting to know each client — their needs, lifestyle, and vision. From there, we study the land or help them find the right property, then create vision boards and design concepts that reflect their taste and goals. Once we have the green light, we move into drawings and collaborate closely to refine every detail. During construction, we stay in constant communication and assist with material and finish selections. After completion, we can also help with landscaping and furnishing if the client desires a full turn-key experience.

How long does it take from conception to completion?
It really depends on the project, but most custom homes take around 18 months from start to finish. The design and drawing phase typically takes 4–6 months, while smaller-scale projects can move more quickly.

Where did your love of horses come from?
We’ve always been animal people! Over the years, we’ve rescued more than 30 dogs and cats. My mom signed me up for a riding lesson when I was eight and instantly fell in love with it. Show jumping became a huge part of my life. Now, we keep my retired Grand Prix horse at our farm along with a few of his successors. They are truly apart of our family

What are some of the best resources for equestrians moving to the area?
There’s a wonderful equestrian community here, everyone is so welcoming and willing to lend a hand. Whether it’s trainers, vets, or fellow riders, you’ll find an incredible network of horse people in this area.
