This summer my boys got really into fishing. We started at Onion Creek and they got “hooked” on learning more and getting excited about being out in nature and learning more about this outdoor sport. I was so excited to see Matt Hudson offer a fishing camp at Camp Ben for kids and signed my younger two boys up for it! They had such a great time and came home with tons of new lures and gear for answering questions right during camp. At the end they were more excited about fishing and were teaching me more about fishing. I wanted to introduce you to my new friend, Matt!
Hey Matt! Tell us more about yourself…
I was born in Austin, Texas in 1983. My mom‘s family owned a hardware store off of Congress Avenue, I spent most of my childhood days at the hardware store and at home on the ranch. My family has 412 acres off of Fitzhugh rd In Travis County. I went to Oak Hill Elementary, Bailey middle school, And then would get my high school diploma from James Bowie high school. And little did I know that’s where life would start within the next 10 years of my life I would have the three most precious little kids in my life and who made me into a father.
How long have you lived in Dripping Springs?
Dripping Springs is always been my hometown, even though I was in Travis County, The people were nice, It was my home town. All my friends were in Dripping Springs, Texas. My whole family graduated from Dripping Springs high school- my dad and all my uncles.
What do you love about living here?
I love the fact about Dripping Springs that there’s still a small community vibe, everybody sticks together, and everybody figures something out to help one another.
What got you into fishing?
I got into fishing when I was four years old. My father fished professionally in the BASS And FLW. A dream I always wished I could do, but I watched that man and I got to know all the pros- Kevin Van Damme, Brandon, Paulanick, Jimmy Houston, Zell Roland. In 2018, 2019 I broke out in FLW coaster series myself and became a pro after 2019 season coming to an end I started full-time guiding in central Texas.
Where are some of the best fishing spots that aren’t on private land in the area?
I know a bunch of communities around here have stock tanks like Caliterra and Belterra. Just take your kids out there all the water has the fish to have fun.
What kind of fish live in the waters around here?
Species of fish that can be found in those tanks or largemouth bass, catfish, croppie and sun perch.
What are your favorite fishing shops to get your gear?
If you ever looking for a good outfit, ROW in Austin is amazing place for outdoorsman. You can also go to bass pro shop known as Cabela’s, and Academy sports and outdoors. They have all the set ups you’ll ever need when it comes to your reels your tackle hooks line.
Tell us more about Central Tx Fishing Camp…
This summer was the first time we had central Texas fishing camp, It was an absolute blast. We had a bunch of kiddos come through a lot of kiddos that learned a lot of things.
I had one kid that amazed me the most, His name was Bowen, He was five years old. He paid so much attention At the age of five, he could name me off 10 different lures how to use them and what they were about to watch a five year old inspire 10 and 12-year-olds was truly amazing.
We will be having these summer camps forever now until I take my last breath, knowing that the smiles on these kids faces are everlasting and the fun that we’ve had is worth every second of it.
