The best part about living in Dripping Springs is that you are in between the Texas Hill Country and the big city! You can drive 30 minutes to a remote state park or 30 minutes the other way and experience the bustling downtown capital of Texas!
When we first moved to Dripping Springs a few years ago I went a little batty on the tourist things to do. I searched through all of the Austin magazines on the top experiences (especially nature and water related!) and started booking them for my family to experience.
I’m a glutton for fun and adventure, what can I say.
The Austin Bat Tour was one that I definitely needed to cross of the list.
We booked a tour through Capital Cruises down on Ladybird Lake and enjoyed our tour of downtown from the water. The guide was full of jokes and historical information about Austin and pointed out all of the new development that was being built.
As sunset approached we made our way to the Congress Bridge and the bats started flying out of their homes in the concrete ceiling.
There are over 1.5 million Mexican Free-Tailed bats living under the Congress bridge. It is one of the largest colony of urban bats on the planet and it is a sight that every local and visitor should see at least once!
But watch out… because if you kayak or boat under the bridge you are SURE to get rained on by the bats… so be prepared for that! Learn more info about the bats here.
Tickets for the sunset bat tour are available from March-October before they migrate down to Mexico for the winter. Tickets are $13/adults and $8/kids 3-12.
