I grew up sticking closely to the American diet of chicken strips and pizza and it took many years before I was willing to try new food from different places. My favorite thing to do now is to go to a new restaurant and tell the waiter to surprise me with whatever they think is best on the menu. It’s always exciting to see what they bring out! I’ve broadened my horizons this way and it made me excited to stop by Johnty’s new bakery in Dripping Springs- The Great British Baking Company and try some authentic british food!
I tried the chicken pot pie and a raspberry almond dessert! YUM! If you haven’t stopped by then check it out! They just opened up a new shop on Mercer Street and you’ll enjoy going in and hearing Johnty and his mum’s accent and trying their goodies!
Let me introduce you to my new friend, Johnty…

Hey Johnty! Tell us more about yourself…
I’m 24 and I moved to Texas with my family 4 years ago after I finished a business degree in college. I have 3 brothers and a sister and 3 black labradors. Besides from baking I love to watch live music and play soccer (unsurprisingly).

How did you get into baking?
I always had a passion for cooking, my brother is a trained chef and so I learnt a lot through him, I love the fact that after making food it gets eaten straight away, and then you can start with a new project, or a clean slate every day.
What is your favorite dish to make?
My favorite dish to make at home is lasagna, which is also my favorite to eat. The ultimate comfort food.

What brought your family over to Texas from Great Britain?
My family decided they had enough of the rain and grey skies and wanted to be able to take the dogs on a walk without having to wrap up in multiple layers of clothes. My mum is originally from Georgia so she always had the USA in her heart.

Do the locals love your English accent?
I’ve had a lot of compliments on my accent since I’ve been here, which is very flattering to say the least, I do like the Texas accent though, so it goes both ways!

What do you love about living in Dripping Springs?
I’m a bit of a country boy honestly, and although the countryside is very different back home I love the wildlife and open spaces in Dripping Springs, as well as the night skies obviously! The community here has been so welcoming which has made it so easy to settle in.

What are your most popular items on the menu?
The most popular items are the sausage rolls, which are house sausage wrapped in flaky pastry.
These are the number one street food in the UK. I want to start the same sausage roll revolution in Texas. (Kolaches beware!)

What do you hope that people will feel when they come into your bakery?
I hope people feel they can have something a little different for there lunch rather than your usual Burger/Pizza chains. Although British food doesn’t get the best reception, we want to change that.
What are your favorite local spots to grab a bite when you aren’t cooking?
As I like to cook myself a lot i don’t eat out too often, however I do like Turcottes butchers and Crimson Creek BBQ!

When is your bakery open?
We are open Tuesday-Friday 7-5 and Saturday 10-4
